Why test your typing speed?
Most people guess their typing speed, and most guesses are too high. A two-minute test gives you a real number, and the voice stage shows what you could gain.

Net WPM after errors is the speed you actually work at. Test a few times, take the average, and you have a baseline to improve on.
Typing has a ceiling
Most people type 40 to 80 words per minute, even after years of practice. Normal speech runs at 120 to 160. That gap is where dictation pays off.

How the numbers are calculated
WPM and accuracy
A word counts as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Gross WPM is all typed characters divided by five and by the minutes taken. Net WPM subtracts one word for every uncorrected error per minute. Accuracy is the share of characters that match the text when you finish; mistakes you corrected do not count against you.
Typing tips
Accuracy first: every uncorrected error costs you a word per minute, so a slower clean run often scores higher than a fast messy one. Keep your wrists relaxed, look at the text rather than the keys, and take the test a few times in a row; the second attempt is usually the honest one.
The dictation stage
The voice comparison uses OpenAI Whisper running inside your browser via WebAssembly or WebGPU. Only the speech model (about 77 MB) is downloaded once from Hugging Face; your audio stays on your device. Speaking WPM is the number of recognised words divided by the length of your recording.
